Step 1: Inspect the Door Assembly
Before installing any weatherization components, verify that the door, frame, and hardware are properly installed and functioning correctly.
• Confirm the door swings freely and latches without binding. If the door drags or does not close properly, weatherstripping will not seal correctly.
• Check that the gap between the door and frame is consistent on all three sides (hinge jamb, strike jamb, and head). Uneven gaps indicate a frame alignment issue that should be corrected before weatherstripping is applied.
• Verify the floor surface at the door opening is level and clean. The threshold must sit flat against the floor to create a proper seal.
Step 2: Measure and Cut the Perimeter Weatherstripping
Perimeter weatherstripping installs in three pieces: one for the head (top of the frame) and one for each jamb (hinge side and strike side).
• Measure the soffit (interior face) of the frame head from jamb to jamb. Cut the weatherstripping aluminum carrier to this length using a hacksaw or miter saw.
• Measure each jamb soffit from the head down to the threshold location. Cut two pieces of weatherstripping to these lengths.
• File or deburr all cut ends of the aluminum carriers to remove sharp edges.
Step 3: Install the Perimeter Weatherstripping
The vinyl weatherstripping screws to the soffit of the frame. The door must be closed during installation to ensure the weatherstripping makes firm contact with the door face.
• Close the door fully and confirm it is latched.
• Position the head piece of weatherstripping on the soffit of the frame head. The vinyl insert must press firmly against the top face of the closed door.
• Drive the mounting screws through the pre-drilled holes in the aluminum carrier into the frame soffit. Start at the center and work outward to each end.
• Repeat for each jamb piece. Position the aluminum carrier on the jamb soffit with the vinyl insert making firm, consistent contact with the door face along the full length of the jamb.
• Verify that the weatherstripping maintains continuous contact with the door on all three sides. Open and close the door several times to confirm the seal compresses and recovers without binding the door operation.
Step 4: Install the Door Bottom Sweep
The door bottom sweep attaches to the bottom edge of the door and seals the gap between the door and the threshold or floor.
• Measure the width of the door at the bottom edge. Cut the door bottom sweep to this width.
• Position the sweep against the bottom of the door with the flexible insert (vinyl or neoprene) facing downward toward the floor or threshold.
• Close the door and verify the sweep insert makes contact with the threshold or floor surface along its full width. Adjust the vertical position of the sweep so the insert compresses slightly when the door is closed.
• Mark the screw hole locations on the door face through the sweep mounting holes.
• Drill pilot holes and drive the mounting screws to secure the sweep to the door.
• Open and close the door several times to confirm the sweep does not drag excessively or prevent the door from closing and latching properly.
Step 5: Install the Threshold
The threshold installs at the floor line beneath the door, providing a seal surface for the door bottom sweep and a durable transition between floor surfaces.
• Measure the width of the door opening at the floor between the two jambs. Cut the threshold to this width.
• Position the threshold in the opening, centered under the closed door. The seal ridge or contact surface of the threshold should align with the door bottom sweep.
• Check that the threshold is level across the full width of the opening. Use shims under the threshold if the floor is uneven.
• Mark the mounting hole locations on the floor through the threshold screw holes.
• Drill pilot holes in the floor and drive the mounting screws to anchor the threshold.
• If specified by project requirements, apply caulk or sealant along both edges of the threshold where it meets the floor to prevent water migration beneath the threshold.
• Close the door and verify the door bottom sweep compresses evenly against the threshold surface across the full width of the door.
Step 6: Final Verification
After all components are installed, perform a complete verification of the weatherization assembly.
• Open and close the door several times. The door should swing, latch, and close without binding or excessive resistance from the weatherstripping or sweep.
• With the door closed, visually inspect all four sides for light gaps. No daylight should be visible between the weatherstripping and the door face or between the sweep and the threshold.
• Verify the threshold is secure and does not shift when stepped on.
• Confirm the latch engages the strike plate fully. Weatherstripping that is too tight can prevent proper latching.
• If the assembly is fire-rated, verify that all weatherization components are listed and labeled for the required fire rating and that the installation does not void the fire label on the door or frame.
