What steps do you take to prepare for commercial door installation? Setting up tools and taking measurements are important, but we recommend starting a little earlier to ensure a smooth and easy installation process. Proper preparation for commercial door installation starts before your door packages are delivered to the jobsite. In fact, it often begins before you even place an order.

Where Does Preparing for Installation Begin?

As mentioned above, preparing for commercial door installation starts before ordering doors. The first step is to determine the type of door, frame, and hardware your project requires. This applies whether you are planning warehouse door installation, commercial glass door installation, or commercial metal door installation. You will need to consider how much traffic the door will see. High-traffic openings often require heavier-duty doors and hardware.

Next, determine the door size and function. For busy areas, a single door may not be enough, and a double door could improve traffic flow. Code compliance is also critical. Does the opening require a fire-rated door? For exterior or warehouse openings, do you need wind or weather ratings? These decisions come before measuring the rough opening because they can directly affect the opening size and construction requirements.

You're ready for the most important step in the process, measuring the rough opening. We'll walk you through how to properly measure your rough opening to ensure you get the perfect fit.

Measuring Your Rough Opening

Once you know the correct door, frame, and hardware for your commercial door installation, it is time to measure the rough opening. This step is essential for all applications, including warehouse door installation and commercial glass door installation. You can watch the video above, visit our YouTube channel, or follow the steps below.

Step One: Grab a tape measure.
Step Two: Measure the width of the opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Always use the smallest measurement to ensure the frame fits properly.
Step Three: Measure the height on both the left and right sides. Multiple measurements help confirm accuracy.
Step Four: Measure the wall thickness to determine the correct frame depth and wall wrap.

In the video above, Wayne demonstrates how to take each measurement and explains what they mean. In his example, the opening measures 37 inches wide, 82 inches high, and has a 5-inch wall thickness. This opening fits a 3'0" x 6'8" door. The extra space allows room for the frame, and the wall depth determines the correct frame throat size. Accurate measurements help avoid delays and rework during commercial door installation.
