It is not far-fetched to say that when you walk into the building, your eyes might be drawn to the décor, flooring, and even the lighting. But have you ever noticed the humble door frame, which plays an important role but is often overlooked? Even during the renovation or building of a property, door frames are often not the focus of attention, but rather the doors themselves. Yet this small detail carries more weight than most people imagine.

Door frames are not only for aesthetics, but they also determine durability, security, and functionality. They are the backbone of your door system, quite literally. Door frames support the weight of the door, aligning it perfectly, and contributing to insulation and safety. Although you will find numerous options in the market, the best door frames boil down to two options: knockdown (KD) steel door frames and welded commercial metal door frames. CDF Distributors offers both options, giving builders and contractors the flexibility to choose the best fit for their project.

The best door frame for your building goes beyond style, and your focus has to be on ensuring longevity and functionality. You should be aware of the types of door frames and their differences to enable you to select the best option.

Knockdown (KD) Steel Door Frames

KD down frames are designed for easy assembly and installation on-site. They have interlocking tabs and slots where the metal tabs slide into matching slots and are secured by bending them into place with a hammer.

They are also designed for convenience and affordability because they are shipped in pieces. Due to the fact that they are shipped flat and can be tightly packed, they are the most cost-effective option.

Installation

These types of door frames are designed for installation in existing drywall openings. They come in 3 separate components:

  • The hinge jamb

  • The strike jamb

  • The head

They use compression anchors along with interlocking tabs and slots at the corners for secure assembly.

Pros and Cons

KD steel door frames are highly valued for their affordability and convenience compared to welded frames. Their flexibility allows builders to complete wall construction before installing the door frames. Their design makes them useful for renovation projects or when access to the site is limited, due to the fact that they can be assembled on-site.

Although these frames are durable, they can have visible seams once installed and may not be ideal in places where a smooth finish is highly desired. Also, assembly of the door frame requires time and precision, and any mistake can lead to alignment issues.

Welded Commercial Metal Door Frames

Unlike KD door frames, welded door frames arrive fully assembled, making them a preferred option for new construction projects. Welded frames are constructed from steel and are made by welding the corners of the frame together, which leads to a clean finish.

Installation

Installation of welded frames is pretty straightforward because they arrive fully assembled from the factory. However, they can be installed in two ways: before the walls are built by securing the feet to the floor, or after the walls are built. But if installed before the walls are built, braces are required temporarily to stabilize the frames and prevent them from tipping.

Pros and Cons

Welded door frames are seamless in appearance, with no visible joints. They are also usually faster during installation because they arrive assembled. However, they are less flexible for retrofit projects in existing walls, as modifications to accommodate the frames are difficult

The right door frame will depend on your building’s needs, installation type, and desired longevity. For expert guidance and high-quality door frames to suit any project, contact CDF Distributors and secure the perfect fit for your building.
