How to Choose the Right Wind Rated (Hurricane Proof) Door

Selecting the right wind rated door isn’t just about picking a size—it’s about making sure your opening meets code, performs under pressure, and fits your specific building conditions. Wind rated doors, often referred to as hurricane proof doors, are engineered as complete systems, so choosing the right configuration matters.

The most important factor to consider is wind load rating (PSF). This determines how much pressure the door assembly can withstand during high wind events.

  • ±55 PSF is commonly used for standard commercial wind exposure applications

  • ±65 PSF is often specified for higher exposure conditions or stricter code requirements

  • ±75 PSF is typically used in more demanding coastal or high-wind design environments

Your required rating will depend on your building’s location, height, and exposure to wind. Projects in coastal or high-risk regions often require HVHZ or Miami-Dade certified doors to meet code.

Beyond rating, configuration also plays a key role. You’ll need to consider whether your application requires an inswing or outswing door, as well as whether additional features like glass kits or louvers are appropriate for your project.

Most importantly, wind rated doors should be specified as a complete assembly, including the door, frame, and hardware. This ensures the entire opening performs as intended and meets certification requirements.

At CDF Distributors, our team helps ensure your door is properly configured for your exact application—so you get a solution that meets code, installs smoothly, and performs when it matters most.

✔ Designed for severe weather ✖ Designed for everyday use
✔ Pressure-rated assemblies ✖ Standard assemblies
✔ Code-compliant for many coastal applications ✖ May not meet hurricane requirements
✔ Engineered for extreme wind loads ✖ General commercial applications
Pressure Rating Typical Application
±55 PSF Standard commercial wind exposure
±65 PSF Higher wind load requirements
±75 PSF Demanding coastal and high-wind environments

The appropriate pressure rating depends on factors such as building location, exposure conditions, building height, and local code requirements.
